Extension Services (Garden)

Extension services are affiliated with universities. They are charged with applying scientific research and new knowledge to agricultural practices in order to educate farmers and others in the community. They do so through a wide range of communication and learning activities, including Master Gardeners and Master Naturalist programs. A list of the key extension services available in the DC metro region is provided below.

DC Master Gardeners is a volunteer program affiliated with land-grant universities. Volunteers utilize research-based information to educate the public on best practices in horticulture and environmental stewardship. The program provides interested individuals with extensive training in topics such as plant pathology, entomology, urban soils, and plant propagation and pruning.

Virginia Cooperative Extension puts university knowledge into the hands of people. Credible experts and educators provide information, education, and tools that farmers, nurseries, and local gardeners can use every day. The Fairfax County Master Gardeners Association, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose volunteers provide research-based horticultural information to home gardeners in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Grow It Eat It: Maryland’s Food Gardening Network

Grow it! Eat it! campaign is a joint venture between The University of Maryland Master Gardener program and the Home and Garden Information Center- to encourage more food gardening in Maryland. Their educational campaign is supported by a Grow it! Eat it! web site and blog. Their mission is to help people improve human and ecological health by growing their own food using sustainable gardening practices.

The University of Maryland Plant Diagnostic Laboratory

The Plant Diagnostic Laboratory provides plant problem diagnosis for all crops. Most diagnoses are based on microscopic examination of the specimen and visual identification or culture of plant pathogens such as fungi, bacteria and nematodes. Identifications of plants, insects and mites attacking plants are also performed. Some specimens are referred to specialists in other departments or other institutions for diagnosis.

The UMass Soil and Plant Nutrient Testing Lab offers a variety of soil, plant tissue, compost, greenhouse media, and metals analysis to suit the needs of a wide range of customers. Services include nutrient, heavy metal, and related testing.

The Institute of Applied Agriculture (IAA) is a 60-credit, two-year academic certificate program in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) at the University of Maryland, College Park. The IAA provides students with the entrepreneurial and technical skills needed to manage profitable agricultural enterprises, including golf courses, sports fields, landscaping companies, and farming operations.
