Brain-Tanning Buckskins
November 6, 2016 @ 4:00 pm - November 13, 2016 @ 6:00 pm
In this 5-day class you’ll turn a wet sloppy deer skin into a soft and velvety, garment-ready smoked buckskin. This class uses the wet-scrape method of hide tanning which can be applied to using brains, eggs, or other emulsified fats. Learning is hands-on for every step of the process.
Each day will include demonstrations by the instructors, video, and individual attention and work time. Participants should be prepared for hard work, physical stamina, perseverance, and sensitivity to detail. Good eyesight is also important.
Deer skins and all materials will be provided. If you already have a green deer skin you are welcome to bring your own and receive a $10 discount. At the end of the course, students will have the option to purchase processing equipment, such as softening frames, fleshing beams, fleshing knives, etc., if desired for their own continued use.
