The mighty Black Walnut tree is often and underappreciated and sometimes hated on tree. The diversity of uses for the Black Walnut should not be ignored. Being indigenous to this continent the Black Walnut grows very well with no assistance or support needed. The trees will often grow in a grove and thus can supply us with a variety of useful and beautiful foods, medicine and material.

In this workshop we will collect black walnuts and process them from start to finish. This portion of the workshop will be hands on. After collecting the whole walnuts we’ll take a drive to Charm City Farms for processing. Participants may take home as many walnuts as you can process and/or take home un-processed walnuts. After processing nuts there will be a demonstration of making walnut ink or dye. Bring a small jar with a lid and take some home for your own art projects. We will go over the utility uses for Walnut wood for tools and furniture. Lastly we will taste Black Walnut syrup, processed this past winter from the Clifton Park Food Forest. That is four truly amazing and wonderful things one tree can supply. We will also discuss some of the mystery in planting things under a Black Walnut tree. BONUS: We’re going to taste Black Walnut ketchup!!
