Friction Fire: Bow Drill

The bow drill is an ancient and effective way for making fire by friction. It requires more parts than the hand drill, but is easier on the hands and thus ideal for beginners. In this workshop each participant will be making his or her own bow drill kit from local materials, to begin practicing with and to take home. The instructor will go over the appropriate types of wood to use for each part of the kit, demonstrate the basic technique of making and transferring a coal, and also cover the best materials to use for fire-starter, and how to get into a good rhythm with your drill. While empowering, this skill requires patience, persistence, and knowing how to pace yourself.
**Participants will need to bring their own wood carving knife.
**Participation is limited to 8 people**
