GAPs class and mock audit at Baltimore urban farm

Vegetable farmers are invited to a Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) class and on-farm mock audit in Baltimore, MD on Tues, Sept 12.
Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) is a voluntary food safety certification program for farmers who produce fresh fruit and vegetables. This GAPs class will be tailored towards urban farmers and farmers who direct-market their produce.
Topics covered include highlights of the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA); Good Agricultural Practices such as addressing pre-harvest and post-harvest water quality issues; and MDA/University of Maryland programs to assist producers in implementing GAP.
This event is organized by UMD Extension Baltimore City Urban Agriculture. It will be taught by University of Maryland faculty and Maryland Department of Agriculture staff. It is sponsored by Future Harvest – Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture and a U.S. Department of Agriculture NIFA grant (award #2016-70017-25503).
Time and location: 8:30 am to 2:30 pm on Tuesday, September 12. The morning will be a classroom session located in the West Pavilion building of Baltimore City Community College, at 3100 Towanda Ave, Baltimore, MD. Lunch will be provided. In the afternoon we will visit Whitelock Community Farm to hear about their journey towards GAP certification and see how MDA staff would conduct a farm audit as part of the GAPs certification process.
