Learning Sanskrit as a Spiritual Practice

February 12, 2017 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Saṃskrit is considered so important because it is devabhāṣā, the language of the Divine, meaning that it is not like other languages where meaning is preserved through use and oral tradition. Saṃskrit is part of the creation, the devanāgari alphabet being the real periodic table of vibrational elements that make up this universe, so even if it were forgotten it would still exist, and its study therefore represents not just an exercise of the intellect but an evolution of the soul.

As the revelations of meaning in sound vibration start to reveal themselves, the soul awakens to deeper and more profound understandings of this play of consciousness. The beauty of its practice is that while the enormous and complex laws of grammar have been expounded on and detailed, one only needs to practice tuning to the vibrations of the language to begin to understand it, and just through daily recitation of saṃskrit ślokas and suktams (prayers and hymns) the powerful meanings are transmitted purely through vibration and feeling.

In this workshop, we’re going to discover the simultaneous complexity and limitless beauty of Saṃskrit through contemplation on the very simple and well-known pañchākṣarī (five-seed sound) mantra, oṃ namaḥ śivāya.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of the sanskrit alphabet and ability to properly pronounce the letters. Beginners are welcome to attend but should first watch in its entirety the “Sanskrit Pronunciation Class1” video under Darin Somma’s youtube channel:
