Oyster Castle Restoration Project
April 24, 2017 @ 9:30 am - April 27, 2017 @ 4:00 pm
We are in need of 5 volunteers for an oyster castle restoration project.
The Nature Conservancy will be moving and assembling oyster castle blocks to build functional oyster habitat. We are in need of 5 volunteers to move 30 lb. oyster castles pieces for 3-5 hours each day.
Work will include loading blocks that are in the water on one reef into the boat and moving and placing them at a second reef.
This is labor intensive work that requires volunteers to spend most of the day outside, on the water, in varying depths, with a firm bottom composed of loose shell. Most importantly, volunteers must be able to repeatedly move 30 pound oyster castle pieces.
Wearing chest waders is recommended, but you will at least need to bring your own hip waders. If you have both, please bring them as we’ll be working through changing water levels and it’s possible you’ll want to change your boots part way though the workday.
The work will take place at Man and Boy Marsh (near Oyster, VA). This site will involve a short boat ride from Oyster harbor. We need volunteers on:
· Mon, April 24, meeting at Oyster Boat Ramp at 9:30 a.m.
· Tue, April 25, meeting at Oyster Boat Ramp at 10 a.m.
· Wed, April 26, meeting at Oyster Boat Ramp at 11 a.m.
· Thur, April 27, meeting at Oyster Boat Ramp at 11:30 a.m.
