Public Lands Day: Nottoway River Paddle

September 30, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Come enjoy one of Virginia’s wonderful coastal waterways and learn about conservation of the state’s pineland forests! Join us for a paddle and hike led by Virginia Pinelands Program Director, Brian van Eerden.

This outing will last 3-4 hours. Space is limited to 12 participants. For more information or to RSVP contact Jen Dalke, volunteer manager at jdalke@tnc.org or call/text 540-335-1302.

Chub Sandhill Natural Area Preserve is located along the Nottoway River, a state-designated scenic waterway. The river’s gentle current make for an easy float suitable for beginners and the sand/gravel beaches are great for pulling up boats and going for a swim. The trip will be approximately 2 miles long.

Meet at Chub Sandhill Natural Area Preserve parking lot at 10 a.m. Participants are responsible for bringing canoe/kayaks and PFD’s. Shuttle service will be provided.

Following the paddle, for those interested, there will be a 1-mile hike on the Preserve to see young stands of longleaf pine, one of Virginia’s rarest tree species. Historically occupying 1 million acres in southeastern VA, longleaf pine is making a comeback across several thousand acres including Chub Sandhill where VA Department of Conservation & Recreation, The Nature Conservancy and other partners are planting seedlings and using prescribed fire to restore longleaf habitats.
