Rally Against Oil Trains

June 13, 2017 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

On June 13, 2016, a southbound freight train carrying acetone and other hazardous substances derailed inside the Howard Street Tunnel beneath Cathedral and Preston Streets. Fortunately, no one was hurt, no fire or explosion followed, and the cars were removed without incident – but if any of those cars had contained crude oil, the resulting explosion could have burned MICA, the University of Baltimore, the Meyerhoff, and countless homes, schools, and businesses. And one year later, neither Baltimore City nor the State of Maryland has taken action to address the public safety threats that crude oil trains pose to our city.

Join Clean Water Action, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, residents of the oil train “blast zone,” MICA representatives, and other impacted Baltimoreans to tell the story of this derailment and demand action to ensure another future derailment doesn’t cause disaster.

(Parking is available in the MICA Station Building parking lot, down the driveway from Cathedral Street.)
