Storytime in the Big Red Barn
Join us for Storytime in the Big Red Barn on Wednesdays July 12 – August 30 from 10 am – 11 am
All mornings include a story, activity, and walks around Chestnut Farm and the Community Garden.
Families are welcome – Ages 3 – 8
$5.00 for each morning
Come join us for an interactive story hour. We will read a story and talk about nature, and our surroundings each week. Books and activities will be a different theme each week. We’ll read and learn about: planting seeds, insects, smelling herbs, bird watching, composting, harvesting, apple trees, pigs, and exploring textures.
Families are welcome to stay after storytime is done. Please feel free to bring a lunch and enjoy an outside afternoon! Picnic tables, and fresh mint or lemon water will be available each week.
Wednesday, 12 July: This week is all about planting seeds! We’ll read a story about a group of friends who plant a garden. Then we’ll explore Fox Haven’s herb garden, and talk about the plants they see growing. Students will get to plant their very own seeds to bring home. Please feel free stay for lunch and enjoy the picnic tables outside at the big red barn. Cold mint water will be provided!
Wednesday, 2 August: This week is all about pigs! We’ll read a story about a girl who takes care of her family’s pigs. We’ll walk over, and observe Fox Haven’s very own pigs. Students have the chance to feed the pigs, and then draw a picture of what they see to take home. Please feel free stay for lunch and enjoy the picnic tables outside at the big red barn. Cold mint water will be provided!
Wednesday, 9 August: This week is all about bluebirds! We’ll read a story about how a bluebird spends its day and all the things it sees from above. We’ll go bluebird watching around the farm. Students will make a birdseed holder that they can take home. Please feel free stay for lunch and enjoy the picnic tables outside at the big red barn. Cold mint water will be provided!
Wednesday, 16 August: This week is all about compost! We’ll read the story Compost Stew and talk about all the things that go into making compost. We’ll dig into Fox Haven’s very own compost pile, a compost expert will answer kids questions, and help them mix food scraps into our compost pile. Students will get to pot a seedling using the compost and bring it home. Please feel free stay for lunch and enjoy the picnic tables outside at the big red barn. Cold mint water will be provided!
Wednesday, 23 August: This week is all about harvesting produce! We’ll get a story friends who have to take care of a vegetable patch while their neighbor is gone. Students will get walk through our garden and harvest some of the vegetables and herbs growing. We’ll prepare a snack using the things ingredients we’ve harvested. Students will get to bring home a recipe and sample of ingredients to take home. Please feel free stay for lunch and enjoy the picnic tables outside at the big red barn. Cold mint water will be provided!
Wednesday, 30 August: This week is all about apple trees! We’ll read a story to discover, do you really know how apples grow? We’ll walk over, and explore Fox Haven’s very own apple trees. A compost expert will answer kids questions about apple trees, and we’ll make a snack using different types of apples. Students will get to pick a few apples, and bring them home. Please feel free stay for lunch and enjoy the picnic tables outside at the big red barn. Cold mint water will be provided.
