Have you ever seen a nice, ripe berry and wondered “Can I eat that?” Or questioned why a certain stinging plant even exists? In this workshop we will begin to explore toxic plants and their uses in our lives, both now and through history.
Starting with a walk through the Clifton Park Food Forest, we will begin by identifying various rumored- and actually-toxic plants, noting their characteristics for future identifications and briefly discussing their constituents. Then we will move to the Charm City Farms Brick Barn to learn a bit about the history and application of hormesis – the idea of using toxins in small doses for beneficial effects – as well as the various toxic and non-toxic uses for the plants we identify. We will end the workshop by making a medicinal product from the materials we collect from the Food Forest.
In this workshop, we will try to cover the following plants: Bittersweet Nightshade * Black Cohosh * Black Nightshade * Bloodroot * Blue Cohosh * Datura Metel * May Apple * Poke * Poppy * Queen Anne’s Lace * Stinging Nettle * Tansy * Tomato * Wood Nettle
**Registration is limited to 15 people**
