Tree Planting – Patuxent River Watershed

April 1, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Come help the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and partner organizations plant trees and shrubs at the former Naval Academy dairy farm!

Sunrise Farm is an 800 acre farm, the largest organic farm in the State of Maryland. Volunteers will plant newly graded wetlands in what was a deeply eroded ephemeral (water flows only after rain events) stream channel. These wetlands will filter sediment and nutrients from the adjacent farm fields and have been designed to infiltrate the water. By cleaning and infiltrating the water it will reduce flooding and pollution to Towser’s Branch, the Patuxent River, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.

Project Partners include Maryland Sunrise Farm, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Anne Arundel County Soil Conservation District, and the Chesapeake Bay Trust. Funding for this event and for future restoration projects on the farm are through the Trust Fund provided by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
