Whimbrel Watch

May 18, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - May 27, 2017 @ 8:30 pm

The whimbrels are here! We are seeking two volunteers per evening to help count these migrating shorebirds as part of Whimbrel Watch, a citizen science project in partnership with the Center for Conservation Biology.

Volunteers will accompany Nature Conservancy staff on a private seaside dock from 5:30-8:30 p.m. each evening. They will be asked to look out for and count each whimbrel that flies by on its northern migration as well as to keep track of the weather conditions during the observation period.

Training and materials will be provided as needed. We recommend dressing for the weather and bringing snacks, water, or even a picnic! Work is weather dependent.

To register for one or more of the following shifts or to inquire about our public Whimbrel Watch Open House nights (5/21 & 5/25), please contact Virginia Coast Reserve outreach and education coordinator, Margaret Van Clief at mvanclief@tnc.org or (757) 414-9227.

All times are 5:30-8:30 p.m. and two volunteers are needed each day.
