Does your garden flutter? Is it abuzz with flighty friends? Whether you are invested in insect garden visitors or just want to learn more, come celebrate pollinators at the USBG during this special event. Join Jim Willmott, Eric Leavitt, and Dr. Ari Novy as they share the wonders of what butterflies, bumblebee, and honeybees bring to the environment, and then help them release select butterflies into our Butterfly Garden! Please note: This program will be offered twice, at 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. It is held outdoors. We suggest bringing sunscreen, protective clothing, and water. A Night with the Bats!

Kerry Wixted is an education and outreach specialist with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service. She has a B.S. in wildlife and fisheries management with a M.S. in Biology.
Join her for a lecture on bat biology from species around the world and in our own backyards. She’ll discuss bat decline and how you can help populations in your area. Then we’ll move the classroom outside to listen to bats by radar and track their movements in the night sky.

Intro to Urban Bee Keeping

The class is an overview of what it takes to keep bees in DC, and the way in which our location and climate dictates the work and calendar of the beekeeping year. This class will help you prepare for beekeeping next year, including connecting you with course offerings, sources of bees, and the beekeeping community.

Teacher Bio: Toni Burnham is the founder of the DC Beekeepers Alliance, and President of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association. She has been keeping bees for 10 years and am the national Urban Beekeeping columnist for Bee Culture Magazine, the largest circulation beekeeping publication in North America.
