Introduction to Basket Weaving

April 8, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - April 9, 2017 @ 3:00 pm

Basketry is sometimes called the oldest of all fiber arts. Ancient peoples wove baskets long before the invention of the clay pot, making it one of the earliest forms of vessels. Traditionally, the user would weave his or her basket with a specific purpose in mind, which would dictate the form, size, material, and technique they would use. If you look at any culture, you will find baskets within its history. The basket, and more generally, the vessel, is a tool that has reshaped the way humans live and contributes to our ever-growing civilization.

In “ Introduction to Basketry” you will begin your understanding of weaving a three dimensional form. Over a period of two days you will weave a 6 inch by 6 inch rattan basket with an oak handle using the most basic weave pattern: the plain weave. You will leave the class with your finished mini basket as well as the knowledge and hopefully the drive to implement your new skills in a larger weaving project.
